THURGOLAND BOWLING CLUB

Thurgoland Bowling Club is situated adjoining the welfare hall in the heart of Thurgoland village. The club is thriving having provided bowling for over 50 years, for both competitive and social bowling, ranging from beginners to expert bowlers. The club is for people of all ages, from juniors to senior citizens and plays at all levels to meet the different abilities of the members.

We currently have 60 plus members, playing in 12 teams, which play in three districts: Barnsley – Dearne and Don – Sheffield Parks, which all come under the British Crown Green Bowling organisation.

The club is entirely self financing and relies on members giving up their time on a voluntary basis. The volunteer green keeper maintains the green to a high standard. Because of this the facility has been chosen to host county games and other prestigious matches, vistors often comment positively on the excellent facilities, which we are always seeking to maintain and improve. Presently with the help of grants and other fund raising efforts, plus members giving up their time, we are installing new guttering around the green, installing new sheltered seating for spectators and constructing a raised spectator area for wheelchair users.

The club provides an important focus socially, providing company and keeping members fit and active. Through the regular competitive matches; the members interact socially with other teams from outside the village.

The club has qualified coaches a welfare officer and a committee, headed by a chairman, secretary and treasurer.

The club is keen to recruit new members, particularly encouraging younger players by introducing them to the wonderful game of bowls. For those not wanting to play, why not come along, enjoy the free fresh air and watch the matches. There are always refreshments available and a smiling face to greet you.
